Lesley Young was JCI UK’s first International Vice President (VP) since 2003. Now she is standing for election as Execuive Vice President at JCI World Congress in Taipei. Learn more about how to get involved on an international level.

Give a brief overview of JCI career to date?
I joined JCI Belfast in 2004 and have held numerous Local and National roles and served as 2010 National President of JCI UK. I was elected JCI Vice President in 2011 and this year I have been working as a JCI UN Affairs Commissioner in Europe in 2012.

What does the role of EVP entail?
The EVP is a member of the JCI Board of Directors and Executive Committee who manage the affairs of the organisation within the powers vested in it by the Constitution and General Assembly. Duties include supervision of and assistance to Vice Presidents assigned to them. EVPs also Chair the Area Conference of their assigned area.

How many EVPs do we have?
Every year there are 4 elected EVPs – one assigned to each of the JCI geographical areas of Africa and the Middle East, Asia and the Pacific, The Americas and Europe.

What has been the greatest leadership lesson you have learnt through your JCI career to date?
The greatest leadership lesson I have learned is the value of perseverance. “History has demonstrated that the most notable winners usually encountered heartbreaking obstacles before they triumphed. They won because they refused to to become discouraged by their defeats.” B.C. Forbes

What advice would you give members about how to reap the benefits of their JCI UK membership?
I would recommend members to find out all they can about the many different opportunities available to them at a local, national and international level. Never be afraid to ask for guidance or advice if you see something you’d like to become involved in. In JCI we strive to ‘Be Better.’ Everyone has something they can contribute, no matter how small, to be part of the solution to make our communities better through the many projects and activities across the JCI world.
