One of the highlights of the JCI calendar is the European Conference, held annually within Europe and attended by people from around Europe and further afield. This year the host city was Braunschweig in Germany and over 2,000 JCI members descended on the city from 13-17 June.
JCI European Conference is a chance for members to meet other members from different countries, undertake training, listen to key-note speakers and participate in various activities and events including the legendary parties. The Germans did a superb job of organising the conference and as Voltswagen were a headline sponsor, we even had a fleet of coaches and mini-buses at our disposal!
The UK delegation were well represented with members from across the UK. We decided before hand to encourage as many UK members as possible to wear something Union Jack related and we weren’t disappointed. All the other countries knew exactly were the UK delegation were because we were the most recognisable and the loudest.
The feedback from the UK members was very positive. Everyone had a great time and came back with suitcases full of memories. The only downside was lack of sleep! Most of the UK delegation were staying in the same hotel and this really helped everyone to feel part of the team.
A notable highlight was Soraya Bowen from JCI London winning the Most Outstanding New Member award at the gala dinner. Well done to Soraya and very much deserved. Another memorable event was when our International Director, Tim Metcalfe, appeared at the charity night wearing just a bright green mankini. He lost a bet with JCI Denmark and wearing a mankini was his forfeit. For his bravery though he managed to raise 650 euros for our Nothing But Nets campaign.
If you haven’t been to an international JCI event then you really are missing out on meeting great people and going to the best parties around. Two of the main international events each year are the JCI European Conference and the JCI World Congress. The JCI World Congress for 2012 is in Taipei, Taiwan, 18-23 November. If you’d like more details, please contact our International Director, Tim Metcalfe on firstname.lastname@example.org
