Supporting Southampton City Mission - #JCISotonLentChallenge
We’re proud to be supporting Southampton City Mission (SCM) as our chosen charity of the year in 2019. This fits hand in hand with our Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the year, working towards “No Poverty” and “Zero Hunger”. SCM is an independent Christian mission working together with churches in Southampton to bless and serve the city. As where as their outreach in local schools, the charity’s primary work involves providing emergency food and clothes to those in need in Southampton through their SCM Basics Bank. Their SCM Basics Bank operates from 6 venues across Southampton, and their team of dedicated volunteers offer much needed help to people who find themselves in a crisis. Last year Southampton City Mission helped feed over 10,000 individuals and provided clothing to over 1,000 in the city. “I don’t know where to begin but firstly a massive thank you and restoring my faith back in humanity. I’ve had some dark few years my wife left me and I lost my mum to MND. I struggled on as we all do from time to time. The last 2 weeks there has been days I’ve not eaten anything and did not know when I was going too. The food bank has really been my life line. The food so kindly donated from others and given to me by volunteers will remain with me I’m truly humbled by everyone’s kindness. Please thank everyone but in particular Sue for her tender kind words and her empathy not sympathy. Thank you!” “I went a the basics bank for food bank this morning and just wanted to let you know what a positive experience it was. Your team were incredibly welcoming and really increased my awareness of how the City Mission food banks work. Thank you so much for saying that I could pop in to see how they run.” Throughout the year JCI Southampton members will be taking part in various fundraising and community activities including our £1 a Day challenge, ABP Southampton and Gala Dinner to help raise much needed funds for the charity. We’ve set ourselves an ambitious target of raising £1,959 over the year in celebration of the year our chamber was founded 1959.

JCI Southampton Lent Challenge

Instead of giving up something for Lent, how about giving back. In support of our charity of the year Southampton City Mission we’re looking for donations for their clothes and food banks. There are several ways you can get involved:
  1. You can set up a food donation collection point at your workplace. Encourage colleagues to give what they can (a full list of food items can be found here)
  2. Bring food donations to our selected donation events (details to follow)
  3. Bring any clean and good condition clothes you wish to donate to one of our upcoming training sessions and we’ll do the rest. SCM are in short supply of men’s clothes, particularly jeans and hard wearing trousers and shoes. Similarly the demand for older children’s and teenage clothes for boys and girls is also greater than their normal supply.
Please get in touch with our Community Director Mike if you would like to find out how you can get involved with our fundraising efforts - community@jcisouthampton.org.uk
