Mark Smith National President 2019 of JCI UK is pleased to announce and welcome JCI Chester as a new 'provisional organisation*' to the JCI UK family of local chambers!
Ejila Makangu who is leading the exciting project said "I am really pleased to have been granted provisional organisation status which will see the establishment of a JCI Chamber in Chester. This, I believe, will be a great opportunity for young people in their 20's and 30's, working and living around the area and potential partners to be part of an established community of young leaders and influencers focused on creating sustainable impact in their community and the world at large".
Why Chester?
Chester is the most populated city in the Cheshire West and Chester Borough with a population of over 118,200 people. Chester is known for its Roman city walls, the most complete city walls in Britain surrounding what was known as the medieval part of the city, its black-and-white architecture and the Chester Racecourse, the oldest racecourse still in use in England. The city’s landmarks and heritage attract many domestic and international tourists, with a complementary benefit to hotels and restaurants.
Chester’s main industries are now the service industries (representing 89% of businesses against 11% in the manufacturing sector) comprising tourism, retail, public administration and financial services.
Chester has a relatively large financial sector including Bank of America, MBNA, NFU Mutual, HBOS plc, Virgin Money, Old Mutual Wealth, Diner's Club and M&S Bank. The price comparison website moneysupermarket.com is based over the Welsh border in Ewloe.
Chester has its own university, the University of Chester, and a major hospital, the Countess of Chester Hospital, named after Diana, Princess of Wales and Countess of Chester. Just over the Welsh border to the west, Broughton is home to a large Airbus UK factory (formerly British Aerospace), employing around 6,000 staff. This is the factory where the wings of the Airbus aeroplanes are manufactured. There are also many food processing plants to the north and west. The Iceland frozen food company is based in nearby Deeside.
Hope Chirengwa Growth and Development Director 2019 for JCI UK said "We believe that a JCI Chamber in Chester and Cheshire West will be suitably placed to benefit from this wealthy heritage and constant forward-thinking mindset of the residents of Chester. JCI Chester will provide a platform for promoting and developing the next generation of civic leaders, government representatives and business entrepreneurs – thus establishing a bridge between corporate, governmental sectors, local businesses and the community."
The mission of JCI Chester (PO) like other JCI Chambers will be to provide development opportunities that empower young people to create positive change in their communities and help them to be better in their personal and professional lives. Ejila Makangu said "JCI Chester (PO) will soon be publishing our plan of action and activities that I'm sure will appeal to many young people in their 20's and 30's in the area. These will include training sessions, networking opportunities, social, community projects and business events. If you or anyone in your network is interested in finding out more our getting involved, please get in touch".

*JCI UK National Board considers application from brand new JCI Chambers and can grant them 'provisional organisation' status. Once the new Chamber has 10 members, a bank account and a constitution, it can apply it the JCI UK National Council ('the supreme authority of the organisation) for affiliation and therefore the PO status is no longer required. Affiliated JCI UK Chambers have the right to vote at National Council.
