JCI Barnsley ‘Shine’: An Introduction to Neuro Linguistic Programming by Pauline Grice MBE

Despite sounding like a complex computer code, Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP) is actually far more simplistic, providing an awareness of how speech and body language can be used effectively to improve communications in everyday situations.

Using practical role-play exercises, trainer Pauline Grice MBE showed the group how to influence the outcome of various scenarios through the use of positive words and actions, e.g. walking up to a colleague at work and saying to them clearly and confidently "can you help me please?" which elicited a positive response. This was counteracted with a demonstration of the same scenario which resulted in a negative outcome due partly to poor body language and a lack of confidence which can have a detrimental effect on relations.

Neuro Linguistic Programming is one aspect of 'mindfulness' or Cognitive Behaviour Theory (CBT) that can help people become more aware of their behaviours in certain environments to improve their overall health and wellbeing. Pauline also explained the important role the senses play in determining how people respond to you, e.g. your facial expressions, the direction your eyes move when asked a question, whether you look away or hold a person's gaze - all contribute to perceptions of trustworthiness or dishonesty, so no more calling into work sick when you fancy a lazy duvet day ... chances are your boss has already got you sussed!

A relaxing end to the session with a short hypnotherapy demonstration - I must admit I was a little sceptical as to whether this would work having taken part in a similar exercise in the past, but the more willing you are to embrace the experience and keep an open mind, then the more likely you are to feel inner calm and drift into your 'happy place', drowning out unwelcome external noise and cleansing away the weary excesses of the day. Pauline's soft, soothing Scottish lilt transported me right back to the Yorkshire Dales, a peaceful location where I always feel relaxed and at ease.

Neuro Linguistic Programming is a fascinating subject with many different facets to explore - this training session provided an introduction to the basics, whilst also signposting those interested towards a range of reading material to support further study.
