APRIL UPDATE: What have we been up to this month?

SOCIAL: Cocktails in the City

Luckily for us, Leeds is home to some very talented bartenders. And on the 7th April, we got to sample their signature drinks at Cocktails in the City. Our personal favourites include Pintura's Gin Mare (see photo below) and  Mojo's Appleton VX Rum. Trinity Kitchen offered a delicious selection of burgers, chickpea curry and Thai cuisine on the night. Leeds Town Hall was a stunning venue for the event - and gave us the slightly surreal experience of watching a cocktail masterclass next to a nineteenth century organ!

We also had a rum and chocolate tasting session, hosted by Hotel Chocolat. Did you know that darker, bitter chocolate pairs better with the spirit? We heard all about the processes involved with fermentation, and managed to grab a couple more cheeky chocolate samples on the way out!

On Friday the 6th May, we'll be enjoying Roxy Ball Room's (puntastic) cocktails over a game of ping pong. Do cocktails help or hinder your back swerve? It's one experiment we're happy to conduct! Free for members & non-members. Click here to book your place.

COMMUNITY: Conservation Volunteering

It's amazing what you can find discarded in woodlands. Whilst litter picking, we encountered Tic Tac cases, drinks cans...and a tea light inside a glass jar, wedged into tree roots.

On the 3rd April, we joined Friends of Gledhow Valley Woods for another bout of conservation volunteering. We shovelled gravel, repaired a footpath and cut brambles. Afterwards, we popped by The Mustard Pot, for a well-deserved beverage (see photo below).

Friends of Gledhow Valley Woods hold monthly Action Days. We highly recommend getting involved - you get to work with a friendly group (with an endless supply of cake!), and make a visible impact on the woodlands. Check out their website for latest updates: http://www.fgvw.co.uk/

BUSINESS: Managing Employees - From Interview to Exit

We love Sam Pawson's (Chadwick Lawrence) seminars; his presentations are always informative and entertaining. In his latest session, on the 12th April, we discovered the importance of privacy settings on social media accounts. Candidates have been dismissed after recruiters spotted a seemingly innocent post, e.g.: "Bring on the weekend!". We also discussed 'out of the box' interview questions, such as, "How would you describe Ashley Cole in 5 words?".

On the 26th May, we'll be honing our ability to resolve a workplace problem in an analytical manner, with Leeds' military corps. This is an invaluable skill that will look great on your résumé, and help you prepare for interviews. Click here to book your place.

INTERNATIONAL: National Council

South Yorkshire counts as international, right? On the 23rd April, JCI members from across the country gathered together to discuss and vote on pressing topics at National Council (see photo below). There were representatives from JCI Southampton, JCI Canary Wharf and even JCI Estonia. Our National President, Sarah Beckwith, chaired the meeting extremely efficiently. We voted on a new website proposal, payment system and location of 2016's National Convention. Watch this space for more info!

We had a great time in Rotherham, starting with a tour at Grimm & Co (see photo below). This enchanting 'apothecary' not only supplies enchanted ailments to fairytale creatures, it's also a venue for writing courses and children's literacy groups.

If you're interested in getting involved with JCI on a national level, we'd definitely recommend Public Speaking Academy (14-15th May): Experienced trainers will show you how to own the stage, connect with the audience, and write a compelling speech. Click here to find out more.

It's been an eventful month - and it's not over yet! On the 28th April, we have our highly anticipated social, The Alternative Quiz of the Year. With over 130 young professionals attending, it's shaping up to be a fantastic night!
