5 reasons to attend the JCI UK National Convention
By Fee Francis, JCI Southampton 2019 President This year’s National Convention is being hosted in Belfast in November. National Convention is my favourite JCI event of the year and here are a few reasons why you should definitely be attending this year!

1. It’s a bargain!

Early bird tickets are £150 for JCI Members and that includes 3 days of training, talks, workshops, socials and a gala dinner at Belfast City Hall. Pretty swanky! The quality of the training sessions at a National Convention are worth the ticket price alone so it’s incredible value for money. You can also pay in 3 instalments as long as you book before 31st July.

2. The competitions!

National Convention features the 3 JCI National Speaking Competitions – Public Speaking, Debating and Extempore (off the cuff public speaking). JCI Southampton won the debating competition at NC2018 and went on to win at European Conference 2019 in Lyon – read my blog post about the incredible benefits of debating here. Don’t worry if you don’t feel ready to compete just yet – we’ll be running public speaking and debating training this Autumn to help to prepare!

3. The location!

Belfast is a city famous for the Titanic (where the ship was built before starting the journey from Southampton!), George Best and Game of Thrones to name a few and we can’t wait to experience all the city has to offer. Team JCI Southampton are already planning to head over the day before the convention to do some exploring – why not join us?! The Crowne Plaza Belfast is the location for the conference which looks incredible and we can’t wait for the gala dinner in Belfast City Hall too!

4. The National Awards

Okay, we might be slightly biased as we may have won an award or two in the past… but we absolutely LOVE the National Awards (presented at the Saturday night gala. They are an opportunity to celebrate the incredible projects, programmes and people within JCI and it’s always awe-inspiring to hear everything that has happened in the year. You can read about our experience at NC201 (and the awards we won…) here.

5. The people!

National Convention is the main event of the year that brings together JCI members from all across the UK (and Europe and the world sometimes too!). It is a great opportunity to meet new people, catch up with old friends and do some good old networking! Not to worry if it’s your first time as there is a first-timers competition which provides the perfect icebreaker for conversations!    These are just 5 reasons out of dozens as to why you should be going to NC 2019 and I can talk about JCI all day so if you have any questions at all, feel free to message me (except if they are specific to this year, then you are better off getting in touch with the COC team: nc2019@jciuk.org.uk). The early bird rate finishes on 31 July so go go go!  https://www.belfast2019.com/ticket-options
