President's Message
Corporate Social Responsibility is one of the most relevant topics for
today’s business leaders. That’s why JCI is teaming up with the UN Global
Compact to assist business and community leaders on how to be responsible
entrepreneurs and leaders. On 28th and 29th July, at the 2008 JCI
Leadership Summit, delegates from 116 countries will go behind the security
gates at the UN Headquarters to learn how JCI and the UN Global Compact are
working together to redefine business in a globalized world. In addition,
JCI will also explore and propose actions with the International Chamber of
Commerce in order to bring about a closer relationship. If you are
interested in participating in the Summit, click on
http://www.jci.cc/summit/ for more details. As part of the
above, JCI has launched a CSR Toolkit and each local President will receive
a copy in July for their chambers use. Other CSR activities in JCI include:
- JCI UK National Community Day was on 21st June – this gave chambers
the opportunity to take part in a community activity on or around a
chosen date so that activities took place around the country either in
aid of the National charity – the Rainbow Trust – or their own local
charity.
- Each chamber supports a local charity through various activities and
enables its members to give back to the communities within which they
operate.
- JCI can be the forum through which local companies can take part in
CSR activities in their local community.
- JCI Nothing But BedNet’s Campaign – in Sub-Saharan Africa, malaria
is the largest single cause of death amongst children under five,
killing one child every 30 seconds, more than 800,000 per year.
Malaria has been brought under control and even eliminated in many parts
of Asia, Europe and the Americas. Yet in Africa, malaria infections have
actually increased over the last three decades. Insecticide-treated bed
nets (ITNs) are a form of personal protection that has repeatedly been
shown to reduce severe disease and mortality due to malaria. The need
for frequent re-treatments is one of the most difficult barriers to full
implementation of ITNs in endemic countries. The additional cost of the
insecticide and the lack of understanding of its importance result in
very low re-treatment rates in most African countries. Several companies
have developed long-lasting ITNs that theoretically retain lethal
concentrations of insecticide for the life of the net (3-5 years).
In this context, based on JCI’s resolution to advance UN Millennium
Development Goals, JCI will contribute to diminish the mortality rate of
children under five by mobilizing its organizations in 116 countries to
raise funds to purchase and distribute ITNs, as well as to conduct
educational campaigns to teach families how to use the ITNs correctly.

donate to this campaign.
- In the last quarter of the year, JCI members around the country will
be taking part in the Secret Santa/Christmas Tree Appeal. This is a
fantastic project whereby JCI invite members of the public to select a
tag from a tree and buy a gift for the child described on the tag
(Christian name, age and gender) and return it to JCI who distribute
those gifts to local children who would not otherwise have a gift this
Christmas.
If you would like to bring about positive change either in yourself or
the community within which you operate, contact your local JCI President and
make a difference!
