Following the success of the first Pound a Day challenge in 2013, it is back for 2014 and we want to make it bigger and better!

Most of us wouldn't like to know how much we spend in total over the festive season, but it's likely to be a lot! However, could you image having to live every day, including Christmas day, on just £1 for all of your food and drink? Well thousands of people across the world do and, on week commencing 6th January, JCI UK will be again.

JCI UK will be kicking off the year by living on just £1 for food and drink for 1 week to raise money and awareness for charity. This is based on one of the UN Millennium Goals (to be reached by 2015), eradicate extreme poverty & hunger. Did you know that hunger is the world's number 1 health risk?! It kills more people a year than Aids, Malaria and Tuberculosis combined!

For those of you not familiar with the project, you might be thinking, how will this raise money? Participants are asked to work out how much their average weekly food & drink spend is, subtract £7, and donate the difference to the cause. So, if my weekly spend was £40, I would donate the £33 difference.

There is also an option for supporters of the event. People who are not fully partaking are asked to sacrifice 1 thing that week, such as a bottle of wine, and donate what it would have cost. In addition to this we are also looking for event sponsors. If you would like to offer the opportunity to your patrons or corporate partners then please use the attached presentation.

The money will be divided between 2 different causes:
- Save the Children. Focusing on eliminating hunger both in the UK and abroad.
- Nothing but Nets. JCI's global charity dedicated to eradicating malaria in Africa.

In 2013 our aim was to raise a minimum of £1,000. We smashed this and nearly doubled it, raising over £1,900 (including gift aid). Since we like to make things challenging, this year our target will be £2,500!

As this is going to be the first national project of 2014, we would like to see all chambers getting involved. Certificates of merit will be presented to all participants at Inspiration Day. There will be lively Social Media activity around the event so start thinking about food ideas, recipes and what you're going to miss the most!
