Training Update
by Emma Eastwood on February 24, 2012 11:34
It has been a very busy few weeks for personal development in JCI UK. Please see below for updates on things that I have been working on!
JCI Presenter
The JCI Presenter course in London on 4th February was fully booked and was a roaring success. The next course is in Sheffield on 3rd March and there are only a few places left. These courses are great for improving your confidence and ability when it comes to presentation and public speaking so please let me know if you are interested.
JCI Trainer
As I mentioned at Inspiration Day I have been trying to organise a JCI Trainer course for May of this year. Unfortunately I have had to put this back until the end of July due to some exciting changes in the course content that are being introduced. The aim of the JCI Training commission is an improved course and a more consistent level of training.
If you want to take part earlier that the end of July then JCI Trainer will be delivered at European Conference in June and there are also 7 courses in Europe (Finland, Switzerland and Lithuania) over the next few months. Having had the opportunity to take part in courses in other countries I can thoroughly recommend it. It is fantastic to work with a variety of people and to find out what they are doing in their local organisations. Please see the attached photograph of me and the graduates of JCI Designer from European Conference 2011 in Tarragona.
JCI Achieve
The next JCI Achieve is booked for 5th May in London. This is a course designed to help our local organisations to be better and to focus on the vision and mission of JCI. I graduated from Achieve in December and found it to be really inspiring. I left with lots of exciting ideas and plans so please let me know if you want to attend in May.
Other JCI Courses
JCI UK is also in talks with our Irish and Scottish colleagues to try and organise a weekend of training to include JCI CSR, JCI Admin and JCI Networking so watch out for more information.
Trainer Day
I am organising a trainer day on the 20th May in Cambridge after their Business Skills day. This is aimed at members that have graduated from JCI Trainer to help them start to improve their skills and work on course ideas. I also plan to organise a second date for later in the year and there is a possibility of a joint event with Scotland.
European Academy
This is a 5 day leadership training academy that will run in August in Gothenburg Sweden. The week is designed to teach deputy local presidents some of the skills that they will need in their year as president and also to create a support network.
I was lucky enough to graduate from EA in 2008 and to return as part of the training team in 2010. These two weeks are some of my best JCI times ever so if you are a deputy local president or considering putting yourself forward as deputy then please apply. Two JCI Presenter courses in the first quarter of 2012
by Emma Eastwood on December 23, 2011 10:16
JCI Presenter is an effective presentation course that focuses on the concepts of creating and delivering an effective presentation, utilizing visual aids and strong delivery methods with a mind towards understanding the audience. Throughout the full day course, participants practice the preparation and delivery of a range of presentations.
JCI Presenter should be taken by all members who want to expand their presentation skills in order to make an impact - be it delivering better project reports or intervening during chapter meetings.
After graduating from JCI Presenter Phil Cavalier-Lumley, President of JCI Bradford soon had the chance to practice what he had learnt and sent the following feedback:
"I used your training and tips. I rehearsed, recorded myself, timed myself, tweaked and tweaked until I was completely happy that my speech was motivational but accurate and I strolled up to the podium with a new kind of confidence and let loose.
I was approached by people afterwards who I didn't know but who congratulated me on such an inspirational speech. The Strategic Director of Young People Services in Bradford commented on my powerful speech and agreed with my view on developing young people in Bradford.
I may sound big headed to say I was ON FIRE but I have never felt that good delivering a presentation and I've never had such brilliant feedback.
I have to say that your training certainly made a big contribution to my success - many thanks!"
Phil has since gone on to win the 2011 JCI UK public speaking competition and was part of the debating team that won the JCI UK debating competition this year also.
The first course in the UK for 2012 is to be hosted by JCI London on Saturday 4th February with Lina Derkeshli as head trainer and Solveig Malvik as assistant trainer. The price is £35 for a full day of training including lunch. To book you place go to www.eventelephant.com/jcipresenterlondon
The second course is being hosted by JCI Sheffield on Saturday 3rd March with Maggie Georgopoulos as head trainer and Emma Eastwood as assistant trainer and again the cost is £35 for a full day of training, including lunch. To book go to www.eventelephant.com/jcipresentersheffield

What can you ACHIEVE?
by Emma Eastwood on December 4, 2011 13:47
JCI Achieve will help you to understand how to establish your chambers identity, purpose and activity which will help to ‘achieve' our organisations mission and vision. It will provide you with the tools to develop your membership and opportunities for them to create positive change within your local community.
Kate Senter, President, JCI Sheffield said: "JCI Achieve really opened my eyes to how we can define our activity, what we stand far and how to share this vision! I would highly recommend it to anyone who wants to understand more about building an active chamber and share best practice. I personally have found this to be the most powerful of all the JCI official courses!"
This one day course on Saturday 10th December in Sheffield is such fantastic value for money that a number of members from JCI Sheffield, JCI Manchester, JCI Boston and JCI Leeds have already secured their places.
JCI Achieve is open to all members and bookings are open until Thursday 8th December.

JCI Achieve in the UK
by Emma Eastwood on November 17, 2011 21:42
JCI UK's training team is pleased to announce that we will be running JCI Achieve on Saturday 10th December 2011 at the Holiday Inn, Royal Victoria in Sheffield.
It is a full day course that uses discussions and case studies to understand and establish the local organisation's identity, its purpose and what to do to accomplish JCI's mission, effectively adopt and use recognisable and appreciated activities, understand the existing demographic groups and their characteristics and how to build an attractive organization that will bring in new members who are looking for the development opportunities and want to create positive change as active citizens.
Kate Senter, President, JCI Sheffield (pictured here) said: "JCI Achieve really opened my eyes to how we can define our activity, what we stand far and how to share this vision! I would highly recommend it to anyone who wants to understand more about building an active chamber and share best practice. I personally have found this to be the most powerful of all the JCI official courses! "
As this course is held in such high regard by JCI internationally, JCI UK will be subsidising the price which means members will be getting a full day of amazing training for just £25, including lunch and refreshments.
JCI UK have been very busy arranging international trainers to run this session so it has taken a little longer than hoped to communicate this out to you all, but we know a number of members are already interested in booking a place

Planning for JCI UK Personal Development in 2012
by Emma Eastwood on November 8, 2011 10:02

2012 seems to be approaching very fast and now that I have officially been elected into the role of JCI UK Personal Development Director I am busy trying to make plans for next year. The first JCI Presenter course of the year is now in the diary to be held on Saturday 4th February in London with Lina Derkeshli as Head Trainer and JCI UK Deputy National President Solveig Malvik as Assistant Trainer. If you would like more information then please contact me at e.eastwood@cityliving.co.uk.
There have also been several enquiries from other chambers with regards to running Official JCI Training courses next year so watch this space for more information.
I recently I co-wrote and delivered a weekend of Local Leaders training with current JCI UK Personal Development Director Dan Lally in Boston. The event was a great success and JCI Sheffield has already expressed an interest in running the course in 2012. We are happy to talk to any other chambers that think that this may be beneficial for their members. The course focus is on leadership in the 21st century and how to use the skills you will learn in your personal career and also your development within JCI.
On top of this I'm busy writing my speed training session for JCI UK National Convention in Sheffield in November and putting together a personal development program for presidents and deputies to run throughout 2012. Next on the agenda is creating a trainer database for all graduates of JCI Trainer and creating some action plans to help trainers start to bank their hours.
If you have any queries regarding yours or your chambers personal development then please do get in touch!
JCI UKs Newest Up and Coming Trainers
by Gemma Fletcher on July 3, 2011 16:40
Having recently graduated from JCI Designer at European Conference in Tarragona I couldn’t wait to be Assistant Trainer for the first time for JCI Trainer. The course took place in Sheffield over the weekend of 25th and 26th June. Alongside JCI Head Trainer Adam Woodhall I had the privilege of training 8 up and coming JCI Trainers. There were members from Sheffield, Doncaster and London attending for what was an amazing weekend and both Adam and I were impressed by the energy and enthusiasm in the room and the level of the work that was produced. JCI Trainer is an official JCI course which takes the presentation skills learnt in JCI Presenter to a higher level and teaches would be trainers the key skills for training adults. The course acts as the start of a JCI training career and I am sure that some of the participants that attended will be future JCI trainers. The next step will be for the graduates to try and clock up 25 training hours in different local organisations in order to become Certified Local Trainers.
James Alcock of JCI Sheffield gave the following feedback after the weekend:
“It's courses like that that make you really think about what JCI is and how far it can reach and what, individually and collectively, we can achieve!”

JCI UK gets two new Certified National Trainers (CNT)
by Solveig Malvik on June 7, 2011 14:15
JCI United Kingdom is proud to announce its two latest Certified National Trainers - Emma Eastwood from JCI Leeds and Solveig Malvik from JCI London and JCI UK Deputy National President.
JCI Designer, the JCI Training Designers Course is a three day course introduces techniques and tools to design training courses with detailed trainers' instructions, participants' handouts and visual aids in such way that other trainers can easily conduct the course.
Trainers can do JCI Designer when they as graduates of JCI Trainer have conducted 50 training hours within JCI. The next step on the JCI training career is IG - International Graduate, which requires 25 training hours delivered internationally as well as submitting a one hour training course.
Emma says:
"I really enjoyed taking part in JCI Designer and JCI Head Trainer in Tarragona. The course content was interesting and I got to work with some fantastic people. This was the first JCI course that I had taken part in overseas and I can throroughly recommend it, as working alongside people from other countries was brilliant. I have many fond memories of the time spent training and really hope to visit some of the people from my course and possibly even train in their countries.
The next step for me is to try and obtain 25 training international training hours so I am going to be contacting the people that I met at European Conference to work out where I can travel to! Training courses that I can deliver include Debating, Teamwork, Word of Mouth Marketing and Discover which is a course for JCI members to help them to maximise their membership. I am very excited about future training opportunities!"
Solveig says:
"I did JCI Designer in Manila and I absolutely loved it. My colleauges came from Nepal, Japan, India and the Philippines and it was a lot of fun learning about training from around the world. I absolutely recommend attending courses in other areas than your own as you get to expand your network and learn about other cultures.
I have some international hours booked already as I'm going home to Norway next week and will be giving trainings for JCI in Trondheim then. I also plan to attend international conferences next year and hope to be able to deliver trainings then. I love giving trainings on networking skills, personal presence and charisma and value based personal branding."

Members Put Their Presentation Skills to the Test
by Solveig Malvik on March 29, 2011 09:07
Written by Annika Vale
Inspired by their successful completion of JCI presenter, JCI members from the Sheffield and
Bradford chambers got together to practise their new skills and to conquer their fear of presenting
for good!

Simon mid-presentation. The prepared topics covered life experiences, investments nad sustainable fashion
The four members were part of a group of nine from the Boston, Barnsley, Sheffield and Bradford
chambers who completed JCI Presenter in Sheffield last month. The full-day course focused on
creating and delivering an effective presentation covering everything from dealing with nerves to
appropriate structure and positive body language.

Feedback was given as Tips and Tops for each presentation
A few weeks later, eager to stop the cobwebs from creeping in, a few of the recent Presenter
graduates decided to put their skills to the test with a Presenter Refresher. Over the course of the
afternoon, each member gave a 2-minute pre-prepared presentation on a subject of their choice
before really testing their on-the-spot skills as random subjects such as pot holes and Henderson's
Relish were drawn from a hat. These were fun but far more challenging and the presenters had to
work hard to keep their cool and watch those ums and ers.

Not a pre-presentation nerve in sight (l-r) Annika, Phil and James...
Overall, the Refresher was a huge success and it was clear to see how much each member's
confidence had grown over the course of a few weeks. New member Simon Leech was buzzing with
adrenaline after the Refresher: ‘Normally I would have been a bag of nerves but I actually enjoyed it!
Everyone was really supportive and it was great to have the opportunity to get feedback from other
Presenter graduates.'
The group are hoping to organise another refresher in a few weeks time and are considering using
the JCI Trainer course taking place in Sheffield later in the year to push their skills even further.
JCI UK Inspiration Day
by Solveig Malvik on February 3, 2011 10:14
Our first National event of the year, Inspiration Day, hosted by JCI Reading, was a great success, and definitely very motivating and inspiring. With over 60 JCI members attending from all over the UK, there was a great excitement in the room.
The day started with Alli's hour, whereby she went Back to Basics, and was officially sworn into office. All Local Presidents were recognised and thanked for the role they are undertaking this year, and wished luck for the year ahead. Then the moment came when the new JCI Members UK pins were revealed, and a 'mass pinning' was carried out, so that everyone in the room could wear their pin with pride,
Jen Little, (JCI Cambridge) gave a presentation on Cambridge's plans for Presidents and Deputies Day weekend, which will be held from 9th to 10th April, more information will follow shortly.
The Presidents from JCI Yorkshire then showed their intention to bid for National Convention from 25th to 27th November 2011, in a way that only they could........ Their t-shirts said it all!Again more information will follow.
Ismail Haznedar, JCI UKs International Vice President came to the event, and took time to really get to know the members, which was fantastic. He gave a very inspiring speech about what it means to him to be a part of JCI. Other members also spoke of their experiences of JCI, in a well thought out session entitled Past, Present and Future.
There were two speakers, Graham Jones, an Internet Psychologist who delivered an engrossing session on The Social Web, highlighting the benefits of Social Media for businesses. And Jamie Dunn, whose determination to succeed means he is aiming to be a millionaire by the time he is 20.
JCI Reading really surprised us all with their outdoor activity, which had a social media theme to it, and meant that we all got to see the beautiful city of Reading, and really got to know each other a lot better.
A raffle was run in aid of the Nothing But Nets Campaign, and the prize was £100 towards the registration fee for National Convention 2011, the lucky winner was Paul Thwaite from JCI Portsmouth. A big Thank You to JCI Leeds for providing Nothing But Net Calendars that were used as raffle tickets and £140 was raised.
All in all it was a fantastic day!!

Emma Eastwood, Immediate Past President of JCI Leeds, has just been awarded Certified Local Trainer (CLT) status.
Over the last 12 months Emma has delivered more than 25 hours of training at most chambers within Yorkshire and in July she travelled to Sweden to train at the JCI European Academy for Deputy Presidents.
Simon Bucknall, Deputy President, JCI London, attended the JCI Designer Programme during the JCI World Congress in Osaka which means that he is now a Certified National Trainer (CNT). You are qualified to attend JCI Designer after you've delivered 50 hours of training in your local and national organisation.
Simon also attended the JCI Head Trainers course which qualifies him to be a certified JCI Head Trainer (HT). Read about Simon's trip to Japan in his blog.
During 2010 Simon has been working with Adam Woodhall, CNT & HT, to develop his knowledge of the JCI Training Institute. With his new qualification Simon is now set to lead certified JCI training programmes in the future.
JCI UK has an objective to develop more certified JCI trainers that will help us to keep the JCI Training culture on top!
Emma and Simon will definitely be playing a key part within the development of JCI training activities in the UK in the future.
Big congratulations to both of you!
Dan Lally and JCI UK
