JCI Liverpool launched!
by Claire Evans on March 27, 2012 19:23
JCI Liverpool (Junior Chamber International) met for their first management team meeting recently at Hill Dickinson's head office to discuss their plans for 2012.
JCI is a global network of young professionals that offers its members opportunities in (local, national and international) networking, training and volunteer work. Notable members, past and present, include Al Gore, Bill Clinton, John F Kennedy, Kofi Annan and many members of the Japanese parliament (http://www.jciuk.org.uk/).
The meeting, set up by Kai Graf Pahlen, solicitor at Hill Dickinson and head of JCI Liverpool, was used as a forum to discuss the Chamber's planned projects for the year and was attended by representatives from the region's professional and financial services sectors. A number of JCI Senators also took part.
Kai says of the meeting; "JCI Liverpool is really gaining momentum now and we have many exciting events and projects in the pipeline. We are attracting great support from Liverpool's professional and commercial sectors and I would like to thank all those involved for making Liverpool JCI come together."
Their main initiative, the "Let's Do It! World" CSR global project, takes place on 13th May 2012. It involves a group of volunteers coming together to clean up illegal garbage in local areas for the benefit of the community. The project has been organised in many countries, particularly in Estonia, where it started in 2008. JCI Liverpool is working with the Commercial District BID, the body responsible for delivering the development and improvements in the commercial district of Liverpool and many local businesses are keen to support the project.
Chantal Minnery, Planning and Performance Principal Analyst at Marks and Spencer who attended the meeting says; "I''m really excited about being part of JCI Liverpool and am looking forward to our team''s first project, ''Let''s do it! World.' This will afford us the opportunity to work alongside members of the Merseyside community and hopefully make a real difference to their area. The opportunities and challenges presented to us are going to be fantastic."

About JCI Liverpool
JCI Liverpool is part of Junior Chamber International, a global network of young professionals, present in more than 100 countries with almost 200,000 members across the world, offering its members opportunities in networking, training and volunteer work.
JCI Liverpool (then known as Liverpool Junior of Commerce) was active in Liverpool in the 1970s. One of the Chamber's most important projects was the first Liverpool Lord Mayor's Parade in 1972, which became an important annual event, and ran for almost 40 years.
Unfortunately, JCI Liverpool was disbanded in 1979, more than 30 years ago. However, the time is right for JCI Liverpool to make a comeback. The city of Liverpool seems more vibrant than ever and presents a perfect environment for a Junior Chamber and for young professionals eager to make a difference.
The Chamber was re-established in November 2011 under the leadership of Kai Graf von Pahlen, Solicitor at Hill Dickinson, together with a strong and committed management team, including:
- Carla Burns, HR Business Partner, NHS
- Chantal Minnery, Planning and Performance Principal Analyst, M&S
- Jenny Norris, Solicitor, Hill Dickinson
- Emma Turner, HR Business Partner, NHS
- Stephanie Eccles, Corporate Finance Executive, Brabners Stuart LLP

JCI Yorkshire in the Press - Budding entrepreneurs made to sell region
by Claire Evans on January 2, 2012 12:30
Junior chamber members are saving lives by halting the spread of malaria, and helping to sell Yorkshire to a global audience.
Yorkshire entrepreneurs are leading a UK revival of Junior Chamber International (JCI), the organisation that supports young business leaders.
JCI’s Yorkshire and Lincolnshire network has almost 170 members, and Kate Senter, the president of Sheffield JCI, is helping to relaunch the operation in Birmingham, where JCI has struggled in recent years.
Yorkshire’s growing importance as a base for the JCI network is reflected in the fact that the county has staged the JCI UK National Convention twice in the last three years – Sheffield in 2011 and Leeds in 2009.
JCI – a volunteer network for people in their twenties and thirties – was founded in 1915 in St Louis, Missouri. It spread to the UK in 1925. JCI gives young professionals the chance to take part in community projects.
“The Yorkshire chambers support each other in a way that is not replicated elsewhere in the UK,” said Ms Senter. “We are all proud of our individual chambers but we are extremely proud to be JCI Yorkshire. That’s why we collectively hosted the JCI UK national convention, which was held in Sheffield and billed as ‘The Only Way is Yorkshire’.”
Sheffield is one of the biggest individual chambers with 80 members, while Leeds has 50. Bradford, Doncaster, Barnsley and Boston in Lincolnshire have 38 members between them.
Over the years, JCI in Yorkshire has provided mentoring for young people who have gone on to achieve national prominence. Bernard Hogan-Howe, the new Commissioner of the Metropolitan Police, is a former member of JCI Sheffield.
Former US Presidents Al Gore, Bill Clinton and John F Kennedy were all members of JCI in the US.
In Leeds, JCI members have been doing their bit to fight malaria as part of a national campaign. Members produced a charity calendar to support the United Nations Foundation’s Nothing But Nets campaign and they held a fashion show.
Ms Senter added: “2011 has seen many chambers increase their numbers and deliver award winning programmes. We are already seeing chambers working together to provide a truly regional offering to members and this is where our strength lies.
“In Yorkshire, we work as a team to provide the best value and the best experience for members.”
Ms Senter has been given the job of “rebuilding” JCI in Birmingham, where the chamber is due to be revived at an event this month (JAN). She added: “2012 will be about strengthening our chambers and ensuring that we continue to be a relevant and accessible organisation for ambitious young people who want to make a positive impact.”

JCI Boston in the press - Young people net cash to help tackle malaria

Young people net cash to help tackle malaria
HOOKED ON FUNDRAISING: JCI UK president Allison Cowell, Gemma Fletcher, Debbie Tills and JCI Boston president Tracy Anderson at the Nothing But Nets market stall and hook-a-duck game, which raised money for the Nothing But Nets initiative.
A GROUP in Boston has staged a series of events and campaigns to raise money to combat malaria.
JCI (Junior Chamber International) Boston is an organisation that aims to provide opportunities for young people to develop themselves and help others.
Since the start of the year, the group has been fundraising in aid of the UN Foundation's Nothing But Nets initiative.
This has seen £612.50 raised by recycling mobile telephones in a link-up with Duncan and Toplis in Boston and a company called Cordaid in Holland.
A market stall, which included a hook-a-duck competition, saw £97.67 raised, and £30.12 has so far been gathered through a penny jar collection.
Finally, a clothes collection in conjunction with Bag 2 The Future has seen 42 bags collected, which will be weighed and shipped off to places such as Japan, if suitable.
The 141 (Boston) Air cadets have also been supporting the fundraising effort with the clothes and penny collections.
Its penny jar contained £14.96 and the group collected 10 bags of clothes.
JCI Boston president Tracy Anderson told the Target: "We would like to thank the Air Cadets at 141 (Boston) and anyone else who has supported them and the Nothing But Nets campaign."
Nothing But Nets in Malvern Gazette
by Solveig Malvik on April 24, 2011 19:43
3:30pm Wednesday 20th April 2011 A MALVERN consultancy’s sponsorship of a charity calendar has helped to raise $8,500 for the UN Foundation’s Nothing but Nets Campaign. The campaign provides insecticide-treated bed nets to protect families from contracting malaria. Quest for Future Solutions director Julia Goodfellow-Smith said there were several reasons her company wanted to support the campaign. “We knew that supporting the Nothing But Nets campaign would reduce suffering and save lives, which is fantastic. By supporting this calendar, we have spread the word far more widely, supported young people to develop their confidence and skills to create positive change, and provided leverage to fund more nets than our initial donation on its own.” It costs $10 to provide a net that will protect a family for four to five years.
